Corrections
How to report an error and what happens next.
If something on this site is wrong, tell us at [email protected]. Reports from historians, clan associations, museums and tartan specialists are welcome.
What to include
- The page address.
- The sentence or field you think is wrong.
- What you believe is correct, and a source: a book with page number, an archive reference, a registry entry or a link.
- If you are writing for an organisation, such as a clan society, say so.
A claim with no source can still prompt us to look, but we cannot change a page on assertion alone.
What happens
- We check the report against the source it cites and against our own source record.
- If the page is wrong, we change the data or text, update the source record if needed and, for a material change, update the page's modified date. Significant corrections carry a visible note.
- If sources disagree, the page is changed to say so and name them.
- If the report is not supported, we leave the page as it is, and we will say why if you asked.
Reports we can act on
- A date or name that differs from the source cited for it.
- A tartan, clan or surname linked to the wrong record, or a link that the source does not support.
- A registry reference that does not match the Scottish Register of Tartans entry.
- A source link that no longer works or that has been replaced by a newer edition.
- An image credit that is missing or wrong. Credits are listed on the image credits page.
Where we cannot tell, a claim is downgraded or removed instead of being left as it was. See the editorial policy and the methodology.
