The surname records

Scottish surnames

Only surnames with enough sourced evidence get a page: at least two sourced claims and a sourced link to a clan or tartan. A name missing here is not unconnected to a clan; it means the records do not yet support a page. To look up any name, use the tartan finder.

How to read these pages

A surname is not a clan, and a clan is not a tartan

  1. A surname

A surname page records where sources say the name comes from, how it was spelled and where it is found. It describes the name, never one person who bears it.

  2. A clan

A surname and a clan can share a name without every bearer of the name belonging to the clan. The link is a sourced claim, and it carries a confidence label.

  3. A tartan

A tartan is linked to a name by a sourced claim about the name's history, not about any individual's family. A shared surname is not proof of a right to wear a tartan.

Sharing a surname with a clan does not show descent from it or membership of it. Each link on these pages is its own claim, with its sources and a confidence label, and none of them traces anyone's ancestry.
